Cooling System maintanence (Thanks to Onevia)

Standard disclaimer:Please follow directions and if you get confused, refer to the Service manual.

Disconnect the negative battery terminal
This will prevent the possibility of a short circuit when working near the alternator
Remove splash guards from underneath the car

There are two pieces to remove
You will see several 10mm mounting screws holding these to the chassis

Drain coolant by loosening the drain cock on the bottom of the radiator and/or the drain plugs on both sides of engine block

Disconnect the transmission fluid cooling lines from the bottom of the radiator
Loosen the radiator lower shroud from upper radiator shroud (It should snap right off)
Disconnect upper coolant hose and overflow tube from radiator

Remove upper radiator shroud by removing the two mounting screws that attach to the radiator

Disconnect lower coolant hose from radiator
Disconnect water temp sensor harness
Remove the radiator and set it aside
Remove the 4 cooling fan mounting nuts (10mm) and remove fan

Remove the power steering drive belt
First, loosen the power steering locking bolt in center of pic

Then, loosen the adjustment nut found on the threaded stud in the center of pic

Remove air conditioning drive belt

Loosen the idler pulley by loosening the adjustment bolt and remove the A/C belt

Then remove A/C compressor idler bracket ( )

Remove alternator drive belt
Loosen the locking nut shown here

Loosen the adjusting bolt and remove alternator belt

Remove water pump pulley

Remove hose from thermostat housing

Remove upper timing belt cover (8mm)

Remove crankshaft pulley bolt (27mm)
Use an impact wrench for this!

Remove crankshaft pulley
If it’s stuck, you may need a pulley removal tool

Remove lower timing belt cover (8mm)
Be careful not to get coolant on the timing belt
Remove thermostat housing and thermostat (12mm)

What? No thermostat!

It’s funny what you will find or not find when tearing things apart.

Remove water pump (12mm)

Scrape off old gasket material
Apply liquid gasket to water pump
Apply liquid gasket to thermostat housing
Allow time for liquid gasket to cure

Install water pump

Install thermostat and housing

There you go

Time to button things back up
Installation is the reversal of removal
Since everything was taken apart, I used all new belts and hoses
One thing I should note is that there is one more 90-degree hose coming from the top of the thermostat housing which is not easily accessible
You may have to remove the fresh air inlet tube that runs across the front of the engine (black tube right above timing belt in the pics) and also disconnect a fuel line
Follow precautions in the service manual when working with fuel lines
Be sure to torque everything back to spec

Radiator
Remove the water temp sensor from the old radiator

and reuse it on the new one

Replace heater hoses

M30 heater hoses were hard to find, so I had improvise

Original on left, replacement on right

I know it looks funny, but it works

You could omit the adapter I used to transition to a larger hose if you want
I needed this because the original hose actually has a larger opening on one end(attaches to engine)
Next, replace the 1/4 bypass hose
Fill with coolant and bleed air out of system
I used 50/50 coolant and water wetter.
