Being an F31 enthusiast, this question gets asked a lot. It isn't simple as black and white for me when it comes to it. I've thought about it since 2005, when Canada started importing JDM cars and I almost bought an A31 Cefiro.
- 1. Imported leopards(2) were priced/sold at around $9000 - How this ties into the Project Leopard? I always say that 9k (for a stock leopard) can build an M30 to be somewhat brand new. I've always stuck by that argument with Project leopard, but I decided to do a full restomod of Project Leopard, exceeding the cost of an imported leopard.
- 2. "Leopard" is vague to me. You not only have to tell me trim level, but also generation. My personal goal is a Zenki F31 Leopard (86-88) Ultima Grand Selection. But I wouldn't mind having a Kouki (89-92 - same as M30) Ultima turbo. But I would take any really, but just not high priority as those two.
- 3. Of the 2 imported Leopards, the importers got them from auction. Conditions were questionable, especially from the 1st Leopard. We come to find there were many issues, even though it was claimed to be low mileage.
- 4. If I were to import a Leopard, I would get one through friends if possible (reduced price and known history) or I would pay the $20,000 from Carshop Friend. At least I know Carshop Friend is all OEM and rebuilt to be like a new car.
- 5. Parts scarcity. Getting an imported car, especially an obscure one, you always have to think of extra parts. If someone rear ends your Zenki Leopard... do you have spare tail lights? Rear bumper? These are things to think about when owning these cars. The Australians and Kiwis know.
Conclusion: I wouldn't mind importing a Leopard, but I would have to do it on my terms. Being part of the Japanese community, I fortunately have more resources for parts and cars. For the time being, I feel the $9000 is a good amount for an M30, but also for Project Leopard.
